Are you ready to become an entrepreneur?
Starting your own business. Not for the fainthearted.
There are no easy ways to eliminate the risks associated with starting a home or small business. You can however improve your chances of success with very good planning and preparation. The key to successfully starting and running your own business is focused on the following three attributes.
Discipline
Motivation
Planning
Without the characteristics described above, then your business is unlikely to be as successful as it could be. This document describes why you require these characteristics and why they are so important.
Why do I need discipline?
In our every day lives, we tend to be driven by routine and familiarity. When you run your own business, you have to react to situations on the fly as they occur. Unfortunately there is no manager to advise you what to do for a given set of circumstances so you have to fend for yourself and make critical decisions that can have either a positive or negative effect on your business. It is not enough that you are an expert at your job function or chosen career. You must also be a diplomat with the people that you have to deal with. For example an employee who is not performing his/her duty as you wish,, a vendor who has promised to supply you with something and has let you down at the last minute, or an irate customer who is dissatisfied with your product or service.
Discipline is also required when dealing with finances and cash flow. When we work for an employer, we have a regular income and we budget our spending accordingly. In most small business environments, the money tends to be on a feast or famine basis. It is relatively easy for large amounts of money to cross your path when you have had a particularly good period of trading. When cash flow is good, the prudent businessperson should save the cash for a rainy day. There is no predicting business flow and the public pockets are swayed by the economy.
Why do I need motivation?
Running your own business is a fulfilling and rewarding achievement, however, it is also very challenging. Properly executed, your business will be the source of a good income and there are plenty of legitimate and legal ways that you can save on your taxes. Thus you get to be your own boss, all the work you put into the business directly benefits you and your family, your earning potential is substantially increased and many more benefits besides. On the flip side, you will find that you no longer work from 9 until 5 and that you are spending a substantial amount of more effort (initially) to make money. The road to success is long and hard. Irrespective of the type of business that you run, and no matter how experienced you are in your chosen profession, the challenge to get people to dip their hands into their pockets is substantial. Remember, one of the hardest things in life is to get someone to part with their hard earned money. Therefore, a successfully run business, needs to provide a product or service correctly packaged and priced for its target market. Getting all of the above factors correct, takes a lot of time, effort and patience. Therefore, you need to be motivated in your desire to succeed and have the personal stamina to stay with it when times get hard. Remember, everyone loves a winner and it is lonely at the top.
Beyond the anecdotes, some business owners feel very burned out by having to carry all of the responsibility on their shoulders. Strong motivation can make your business succeed and will help you survive slowdowns as well as periods of burnout. So you need to ensure that you are determined to succeed in the face of adversity. You should also be aware that the demands of the business will initialy eat into your personal time and freedom. Thus you may find that you are more pre-occupied with the worries of running your business rather than spending quality time with your family and friends. This is perhaps one of the hardest things to cope with when you are starting up and trying to establish yourself.
What about planning?
It is essential that you have a business plan to support your business. A properly written business plan is a powerful tool for you to use to support your business. As time progresses, your business plan will provide valuable insights as to what is going on and what is going wrong with your business. additionaly, a well executed business plan can show you what your original intent for the business was and where you have deviated from the plan. Thus your business plan can show you what is going wrong from your original intent as well as to show you what you are doing right. If all is going to plan, a well executed business plan will be a valuable asset if you are trying to raise funds from a finacial services company or a venture capitalist. Your business plan will say a lot more about you and your business providing it is well thought out, well executed and on target.
