Understanding Total Cost of Ownership in Building an Advanced Store Systems B...
This IDC Global Retail Insights Opinion paper provides a detailed view of the considerations required to evaluate advanced store systems platforms and how to ensure that the retailer's business priorities are fully addressed in the business value analysis. It examines the importance of using a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) model as a more accurate reflection of investment cost and benefit than mere asset purchase. It analyzes research results that show the different store systems evaluation priorities used by different retail industry segments and provides sample retailer models and financial metrics to use as guides, concluding with a review of the full value proposition that can result from a broad, strategic investment in new retail POS technologies.

Protecting The Retail Information Chain
The retail supply chain must support two interdependent processes: Product flow; Information flow. An effective and efficient product supply chain depends heavily on an integrated, visible, "Always-on" information chain. Keeping that information chain "Always on" is one of the key challenges facing many retailers. Protecting critical electronics from negative power and environmental factors is vital to successful retail operations. From the cash register, to the warehouse to the corporate data center, technology must be protected from power interruptions and aberrations as well as heat and humidity that can disrupt business operations. This paper provides solutions for protecting mission-critical functions along the retail information chain so retailers can keep customers happy - and improve their own bottom lines.
A Practical Guide To Advertising
The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), the body which represents advertising agencies, defines advertising as: "The means of providing the most persuasive possible selling message to the right prospects at the lowest possible cost". In other words, having identified those customers whose needs and wants are best satisfied by your product or service, you evaluate the most cost-effective method of communicating these benefits to them, thereby encouraging them to purchase from you. At this stage, it is important to appreciate that advertising does not simply mean television, radio or newspapers. This paper explains wide range of techniques available in advertising.
Modernizing Retailing Worldwide At The Point Of Sale
The premier real-world roll-out of new information technologies excites an industry. The METRO Group's Future Store (FS) by a group of companies organized as the Future Store Initiative (FSI) is such a roll-out. It demonstrates how to significantly change today's worldwide shopping, retailing, and value chain logistics. FS is based on state-of-the art content integration technologies, which connect, integrate, and exploit content sources along the value chain and on all content devices in the store. In addition, the value chain processes have been adapted to seamlessly operate in real time and without bothering consumers with technical constraints. FS sets national and international standard, and provides lessons on content integration for CIOs in a range of industries.
Improved Point-Of-Sale Reporting
Products rarely "Flow" directly from manufacturers to end user customers. Instead, a group of intermediaries (e.g., distributors, resellers, system integrators, retailers), a "Channel," typically works with both manufacturers and customers to make the process of purchase and delivery more efficient. While a typical distribution channel can be quite efficient at moving products from manufacturer to end user, it may not be a good conduit of useful information up and down the chain. This white paper reveals that Point-Of-Sale (POS) reporting of sales-out and inventory by channel partners is a prime area for improvement. It examines current practices and discusses approaches for making POS reporting more accurate.
Point-Of-Sale Networks Simplified
Merchants and other organizations need to handle more transactions during peak times to increase sales and provide better customer service as consumers use credit and debit cards at an ever-increasing pace. Traditional dial telephone authorization is a frustrating and costly bottleneck, but lightning fast, always-on connections using Internet Protocol (IP) can deliver an entirely new level of speed and security. Local Area Networks (LANs) allow those connections to be shared among many devices, which eliminate the need for multiple phone lines. Networked broadband connections open up new opportunities. Networking is now relatively easy for the non-technical user of payment solutions. Standardized products and easy-to-follow configuration wizards make the process simple and pain-free.
Total Cost Of Ownership For Point-Of-Sale And PC Cash Drawer Solutions
The white paper presents a Total Cost Of Ownership (TCO) analysis of IBM's Point-Of-sale (POS) and PC Cash Drawer (PCCD) solutions in the United States and Europe to uncover the actual costs associated with both systems over their lifetime of use. The goal of this white paper is to help retailers understand the differences in total costs between POS and PCCD checkout systems as they evaluate future purchases.
Flexible, Innovative POS And Store Inventory Management Solution
Retek Integrated Store Operations (ISO) can improve Point-Of-Sale (POS) systems as well as cash, store labor, and store inventory management. Based on open-technology standards and native Web architecture, the Retek ISO applications are entirely Java-based and are optimized for deployment on Intel processor-based systems, to deliver high-performance, flexibility, and reliability to meet a wide range of retail business requirements. Retek ISO applications are built on an open architecture that is independent of the operating system, application server, database application, and hardware. This flexible architecture enables retailers to improve the service provided to their customers while significantly improving the economics of the store.
Loading Dock Visibility Gives Retailers View of Inventory at All Times
A real-time view into inbound shipments helps retailers avoid stock-outs and other nightmares at a critical juncture - the point of sale. The loading dock is becoming an increasingly important choke point in the supply chain. It's where the validity of information about inbound shipments, and to lesser degree outbound ones, is tested and ultimately judged. Collecting information about outbound shipments is much easier because raw data generally are stored internally, either in the retailer's warehouse management or enterprise resource planning system. Picking the item out of inventory, or doing a shelf check, ideally should confirm the accuracy of reports generated by the underlying software-based planning or inventory management system.

The Value of Point-of-Sales Data in Managing Product Introductions: Results F...
It has been suggested that the sharing of downstream demand information in supply chains could be particularly beneficial in situations of unpredictable demand, such as product introductions. In this paper, a case study approach is used to examine the value of supplier access to retailer point-of-sales data in managing product introductions. The study reveals that access to point-of-sales data can, indeed, reduce the risk of stock-outs and enable rapid correction of overly optimistic forecasts. The supplier's internal integration and production flexibility, as well as the proportion of total demand for which point-of-sales data is available are of critical importance to the attainable benefits.

Coupling Mobile Payments and CRM in the Retail Industry
The growing prevalence of electronic commerce and the widespread use of mobile devices have made mobile payments an interesting alternative method of payment for customers and merchants. One major issue to resolve is the integration of a real-time wireless means of payment within their current payment system. In this paper, author proposes architecture of mobile payment system to improve business processes and increase customer loyalty. An all-in-one device that enables mobile payments and also integrates a membership scheme would simplify and significantly accelerate the payment process at the Point Of Sale (POS). Moreover, the deployment of an effective customer relationship management (CRM) system and an adapted data mining tool would allow retailers to propose a dynamic-generated website to their customers.
